Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion: Philippines
Communion Ministry in the Philippines
Description from a local parish context
In the Philippines, at the beginning, only men were allowed to be communion
ministers. This is because in the parochial setting, the women already were
very much involved in many of the key responsibilities and key positions of
the parish. So, to give men a greater role, responsibility and participation
in the Eucharistic celebration, the ministry of communion was reserved only
for the men.
However, last 2003, the Archdiocese of Manila held a formation seminar for
communion ministers and it was made known to all communion ministers who
attended the seminar that women were now allowed to be communion ministers.
This was however for special reasons only and for certain particular
situations that are in need of female communion ministers. The norm and
standard for receiving ministers of communion is still basically for the
male gender.
As to the attire and functions of the communion minister, this also depends
on the particular focus or goal of the parish. Some parishes require a
strict uniform code with the ministers using a "hood" that follows the
liturgical color of the Eucharistic celebration. Other parishes do not
require a uniform but rather let their ministers wear the traditional
attire for the Filipino male - the barong tagalog, and dark long pants.
As to the functions of the communion minister, these are basically three:
1. service at the Sunday and weekday Masses;
2. service at the Eucharistic adoration every Friday;
3. giving communion to the sick of the parish.
The communion minister is also called upon to do other functions within the
parish, like lead in organizing various activities in relation to Eucharistic
processions, and in the organization of special liturgical celebrations like
Holy Week and Easter.
